There are various reasons as to why our computer gives us a hard time and a headache when we are running things on it. There are also various ways to prevent and cure it without having it reformatted all over again. These are the following components that maybe causing your computer to read slowly and act slowly.
Spywares and Viruses
Spywares or certain viruses may be found or may be embedded in the things that we download, websites that we visit or programs that we install. They install themselves and take partial control over our computer for sometime. And these spywares can do so much harm to our computer; one would be causing it to slow down. Therefore, we must be careful with the things that we do online, and restrict our installations, or read reviews before we actually install them. If you suspect a virus though, you may be able to run a recently updated Virus Scanner like AVG Antivirus which is actually free. Or you may consider Spy Sweeper to detect and scan your system for Spywares.
Disk Clean Up
Disk clean up can very much get rid of unnecessary clutter found inside our hard disks. To do this, we can actually run our System Disk Cleanup, through clicking the Start Menu, clicking Run, and typing "cleanmgr.exe." to run the Disk Cleanup dialog. Instructions will be inside the dialog, and this may take a while to clean up everything if it is the first time you will be cleaning your disk. Alternatively, you can use a freeware utility such as CCleanup to do the same thing.
Unnecessary Softwares/Programs
We have this tendency to install things in our computer and never use them. Moreso, some of these programs can be heavy and use much disk space. So whatever program you have in your computer right now, that you don't actually use or need, you might do yourself a favor and uninstall it, to help free space in your hard drive, and increase your computer's overall performance.
Defragmentation of your Computer
Doing this is just like sorting out things in your computer to make it systematized and in order. This can also improve your computer's performance. To do this, all you have to do is click on the Start Menu and click Run, type "dfrg.msc" and click OK. A dialog will pop up, and all you have to do is to click Defrag and let it be for an hour or more as it sorts everything in your computer.
Registry Cleanup
Registry refers to the orphaned little files that are left in your computer as you install and uninstall various programs or softwares. Even after successful uninstallation, program files do not remove all traces of themselves. As time goes by, your registry can be disordered and they may cause system lockups, slow performance and a bloated registry that can take a start up longer. There is a freeware utility that can help you sort this out, and its called RegSeeker. It scans the registry for these files, and safely remove them in one click. Be careful though and back up using the backup feature of the application.
These things can be the basic steps in speeding up and maximizing your computer's performance. Other things that can make your computer perform faster include making sure memory is enough, as 512mb is suggested, while anything higher is ideal. Also it would help if you turn off default Windows services that you do not actually need.
By trying to look into these simple things first when experiencing slow computer response, we may get to understand that we should take wary concern in what we do with our computer.
